CentralAsiaEconomics

The global region of Central Asia is home to some 60 million people according to the United Nations Development Program. Some of the most rapidly growing economies of the world surround Central Asia with China on its eastern border and India/Pakistan to the south.

Yet this part of the world has struggled to fully capitalize on its wealth of natural resources, the staggering growth of its neighbors and its global strategic importance as a bridge from East Asia to Europe. The collapse of the Soviet Union created the map of Central Asia as we know it today, but it also created serious challenges for the economies of the newly formed States and even greater setbacks for the people of the region. Political instability, poverty, lack of educational opportunities and violations of basic human rights have been significant barriers to sustainable Central Asian economic development. These barriers have unfortunately stymied the economic potential of millions of people in Central Asia, especially in rural areas.

Yet there is a renewed focus on the global importance of Central Asia, as evidenced by Secretary of State John Kerry’s recent visit to the region. In particular, Mr. Kerry’s trip to Turkmenistan, the first visit by a United States Secretary of State since the fall of the Soviet Union, underscores the strategic value of this region.

Tajikistan has not been fully at peace since a civil war in the 1990s. It borders Afghanistan, and for years, the Afghan war has threatened to spill over into the country as the United States winds down its military presence in the region.  Human rights groups and the reconciled former militants in the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan have long accused the government of having a heavy hand in suppressing lingering unrest. The country has struggled to develop economically, despite prestige projects like the building of the world’s tallest flagpole and largest teahouse.
