Our History

Omega International began in 2005 with the goal of training individuals to influence their society towards increased dignity and peace.

Our work began with a focus on rebuilding the education sector in Afghanistan. This included projects on training teachers, offering English classes, and developing community libraries throughout Northern Afghanistan – check out our video below, which highlights our work in Afghanistan!

Our work there continued for eight years, but was paused in 2013 due to resistance to female education, which became a security concern for local and expatriate staff.

In 2015, a number of founding members relocated to Tajikistan, where they worked in various spheres. But in 2020, Coronavirus left many local people and refugees struggling to make ends meet, and in 2021, the unstable political situation in Afghanistan drove more refugees to Tajikistan. Our founding members heard countless stories of the challenges people were facing, and knew that opening an Omega branch in Tajikistan meant they could respond to felt needs in Tajikistan, too. That year, we were registered here as a non-government organization, and began to investigate potential ways to build capacity amongst Tajiks and Afghan refugees. Since then, we have started a sports project, training centre, and women’s centre, where we work to equip and empower people.
